Three Waves That Shaped a Life, and the Gratitude That Came After

So lay out your towel, unfold your chair, get comfortable, and break out a cold one.

That's the warm, easygoing invitation Jim Hamilton extends at the start of Waves of Life: A Grateful Man's Journey. It's a fitting image for a memoir that feels like sitting on the beach with an old friend, listening as he tells you the story of his life, the good, the painful, and everything in between.

Hamilton grew up in the idyllic surroundings of 1960s Northern California. Life seemed simple and full of promise, and he had no idea of the challenges, pain, and grief that were waiting for him. In Waves of Life, he looks back on three major "waves" that reshaped his life, and the lessons he learned from each one.

The first wave was the loss of his older brother, a grief that changed the shape of his family and his understanding of the world. Losing a sibling is one of the most profound losses a person can experience, yet it's often overlooked. Siblings are frequently our longest relationships, the people who share our childhood memories and family history, and their absence can leave a hole that lasts a lifetime. Hamilton writes about that loss with honesty and tenderness.

The next waves brought battles with health issues and with addiction. These are struggles millions of people know intimately, and Hamilton doesn't shy away from them. He writes candidly about the hard times, the moments of pain, and the difficult work of change, and he credits the key people whose wisdom and support helped him through. He also draws on the insights of sports and medical experts, adding perspective and practical understanding to his personal story.

What ties the book together, and what makes it so uplifting, is gratitude. Through every wave, Hamilton came to recognize the value of what remained: the people who loved him, the ordinary days, and the chance to keep going. As he writes, love is the greatest gift you can receive and give, and it may be easier to see if you slow down and take the time to enjoy everyone around you and every day you have.

That's more than a nice sentiment. Researchers who study well-being have found that regularly practicing gratitude, for example by writing down a few things you're thankful for each week, is associated with greater happiness, more optimism, and even better sleep and health. Gratitude doesn't erase pain, but it can change our relationship to it, helping us notice the good that exists alongside the hard. Hamilton's story is a living example of that idea. His gratitude doesn't deny the loss and struggle he faced. It grew out of them.

The book is compact and easy to read, the kind of memoir you can finish in an afternoon but will think about much longer. Hamilton, a consultant and author, writes in a conversational, heartfelt voice that makes you feel like you're right there with him, riding the waves.

Waves of Life is for anyone who has faced loss, health challenges, or addiction, for readers who love reflective, uplifting memoirs, and for anyone who could use a gentle reminder to slow down and appreciate the people and days they have. Along the way, you may discover how to dive in, embrace the current, and make your own journey a little more meaningful.
